The LK MNDD team, from Denver, Colorado, recently was given the rare opportunity to bring reggae-inspired street art to Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, Jamaica. Founded by reggae icon Bob Marley (Robert Nesta Marley) and the home to reggae music, Tuff Gong Studios is now the home of a living street art piece by LK MNDD.
With help from fellow artist and business partner Jonathan Lamb, LK MNDD artist Michael Ortiz created a portrait of the great Bob Marley. Ortiz drew from the music and lyrics of Bob Marley and the Wailers to create the piece, and specifically found inspiration in the live show "Live in Santa Barbara, CA, 1979." The strong, energetic set of legendary tracks guided Ortiz through the paint session, during which he tagged Marley's lyrics of revolution and phrases of freedom as he heard them. Tags including "Get Up, Stand Up," and "Real Revolutionary" support the portrait, giving the piece an authentic rebel theme, as if the artist was tagging protest in the streets.
LK MNDD realized the levity of the opportunity quickly. "We've been doing productions all over but nothing this heavy," Ortiz said. "Suddenly we were in the place where all of the magic happened and we felt inspired as if we were there to cut a track in the studio, so that's just what we did. I started taggin' all over the wall. we went in with intent and it all felt correct and meant to be."
"After everything we went through to get here, the occurrence was a miracle," Lamb said. "It felt good to be given praise from the people who helped -- from the guys who escorted us into the heavily secured studio, to the security guards, to the crowd that gathered around once it was established that we were doing a production."
The mural is now a living project, with Tuff Gong giving LK MNDD permission to continue painting at the International studio and for the Marley family. LK MNDD is honored and pleased to take part in such an important part of music, culture and history.

Create Denver re-imagines the City Beautiful Movement
DENVER, CO — May 3, 2013 — Create Denver has redesigned a portion of the McNichols Civic Center Building as a creative installation and flexible coworking space, which will be on display May 10-June 23 as part of the City Beautiful 2.0 project.
City Beautiful 2.0 opens on Friday, May 10 from 5-8 p.m. and celebrates the civic and community engagement ideals of the City Beautiful Movement, first championed in Denver in 1904 by former Mayor Robert Speer. The installation includes architectural renderings of the Civic Center's built environment, textiles, and the natural elements of the park.
The project also includes a coworking space – featuring custom, mobile furniture created by local artists – that is free and open for use during normal McNichols Building hours (10 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday-Sunday).
"Create Denver is helping to establish the McNichols Building as cultural hub for the city – and we're officially retiring Create Denver Week so that we can help bring year-round programming and exhibitions to the building," said Create Denver program manager Lisa Gedgaudas.
"We've experimented with the use of space in the building, and we've come up with place that will give Denver's creatives, entrepreneurs, residents and visitors a chance to experience a coworking environment, and that will hopefully generate more ideas on how to integrate the building with its surrounding built environment."
Come play in the park
Celebrate the beginning of summer on Friday, June 21 from 2-10 p.m. at the McNichols Building and surrounding Civic Center Park. There will be activities such as ping pong, gardening, yoga, picnics and food trucks. A 3-D video mapping display of the history and future evolution of the McNichols Building by Legwork Studio & Ceavco Audio Visual will be projected on the back of the building around 9 p.m.
Artists and collaborators contributing to the City Beautiful 2.0 include: Eric Robert Dallimore (Leon), Lauri Lynnxe Murphy, Matt Scobey (New Yard), Corbin Clay (Azure Furniture), Ethan Jackson, Scott Bennett (Housefish), Jonathan Lamb & Michael Ortiz (Like Minded), Matt FaJohn, Aaron Ray (Legwork Studio), Rick Griffith (MATTER), Kevin Kerndt (Kerndt Design), Amy Fisk (Exponent Communications), Jared David Paul Anderson (JDP Art Services), Public Coffee, Ceavco Audio Visuals, New Earth Green Depot, and Design Practice LLC.

"Conditions are Subject to Change" is the name of the series of new works by Denver Artist Michael Ortiz. The works are the second installment to Michael's latest body of work for 2013.
Michael's use of Multi-Layering techniques with mixed media such as stencils, spray paint, and collage are a representation of how we live in a world of ever changing environments, possibilities and ways of thinking. Through layered collage and street art state of mind Michael explores ways to create new ideas and techniques by trying new things and not keeping with a general outline as to how each piece is made. With this Michael has been able to achieve different effects in each piece of art while maintaining a cohesive and responsive body of work.

2.19.13: Have A Good One: New Works by Michael Ortiz
"Have a Good One" is the name of the new series of artwork by Denver Artist Michael Ortiz. Michael explores the ideologies and the ephemeral nature of graffiti using the aesthetic throughout the paintings as a base layer to build from, covering up old tags with new tags. The works are all constructed on wood panels and consist of print collage, handmade stencils, spray paint, paint marker, acrylic and latex paints to build the layers. Michael works with a certain 'create and destroy' state of mind and the subject matter is compiled with the same mentality as he would use if he was doing the art on a street wall. The subjects in the art are bold, impactful and draped with vivid colors. These new mixed media collages have a sense of decayed graphic design and painterly technique arranged in a way to affect the viewer with provocative thought. The name 'Have A Good One' has a number of different meanings in society today and in this instance it refers to the impermanence of doing a piece of graffiti or really anything you do in life. The whole point in life is to make it good so, "Have A Good One", because it will all be gone one of these days.

Somehow, in between all the chaos of schedules, I managed to catch up with Lamb and Ortiz to get a little bit of history and an inside look at the creation of their current show “Jus’ Sayin’.
So Guys, tell me a little bit about your background and your art?
Jonathan Lamb: I studied art at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado under the guidance of Mick Reber, my painting and drawing mentor.
Michael Ortiz: Before Like Minded I had been working in the printing and design industry for mad years with school off and on gathering different techniques both in physical application and digital application. My art these days a mix between painting, printing techniques and street art
Nice! So, how long have you guys been working together and how did you meet?
JL: We have been working together as Like Minded Productions since 2007 and had been painting together informally for a few years prior to that. We randomly met in an elevator of a high rise apartment building in Denver.
MO: The apartment building was one I was living in, in Uptown Denver, I was waiting for the elevator and saw Jon come up to the door. I let him in and rode the elevator with him to the floor he was visiting had a conversation about art during that time and have been great friends since.
How did you come up with the concept for the “Jus’ Sayin” show?
JL: The phrase has been a running joke in our printshop for a few months now along with a few other sayings. It just kinda stuck as the idea for the show as it got more fleshed out.
MO: Plus the theme of the show involves commonly used phrases and sayings.
You both have worked successfully on solo projects in the past, what is your creative process like working as a collaborative unit?
JL: A shared vision and complete honesty with each other starts it off. From there- lot’s of music, ideas and the sky’s the limit. The trick is to work after the sun goes down.
MO: It works well because we run a very art oriented business, we’re both artists with a lot of knowledge of both trades of printing and art. Working collaboratively comes easy because we’re always working together on projects, we surround ourselves with art and art minded people, and we can always give each other advice. There’s also the different qualities that each of us have and we’ve figured out how to use them toward our advantage.
In this show you give a nod to locals in neighborhood (NoDo) and other local Denver icons like Pam Grier who grew up in Denver. Do you feel it’s an important theme for you guys?
JL: Work, Live, and Play in the same place. I think Denver just kinda seeps into the creative process.
MO: Being a Colorado native, involving Denver and Colorado comes natural to me, also as Like Minded we really feel we are contributing to the growing art scene here. Over the past few years Jon and I have strived to provide the community with art in many different ways. We have involved ourselves in art shows consistently within the past 3-4 years, we’ve done large mural projects for galleries, outdoor walls, and art events in Denver. As well as being active artists in the community, we also provide a service for artists to come and receive advice and affordably reproduce their artwork so that other artists can also strive in Denver. We really feel it is an important theme because we want growth in the arts here.
That’s what I’m talkin’ bout’ Willis! So, most importantly now, what’s your “go to” snack food in the studio, or do you just run on pure creative juices?
JL: Cheba chews, although our local Thai food take out spot probably benefitted pretty well from the “Jus Sayin show”
MO: That and whatever pizza places were around us.
Where do you see yourselves in 2012?
JL: Atop of a Mayan Pyramid battling off the impending apocalypse
